A comic-detective cartoon that is variably funny and fun January 1, 2009 Detectives Sam the dog and Max the rabbit are, as Sam says, "freelance police," which I think is supposed to be a joke, since they are clearly private investigators. But this is one of the issues I have with the game. All of the dialogue is an attempt at a joke, and since there isn't anyone alive who is funny every time they speak, about 90-95% of the speech in this game is either a lame pun or a lamer non sequitur. When the jokes hit right, they are quite funny, but these are few and far between.
As far as adventure games go, this game is quite easy, but the puzzles are rather creative. Wait until you have the "dream fight" in Sam's mind. When the dialogue falters, the goofy game play often picks up the slack.
I like the jazzy music, but each scene has its own music, and since you must return to scenes over and over again, the music becomes repetitive. The voice acting isn't as good as I was expecting. Bosco is the funniest, and Sam and Max are tolerable, but the Soda Poppers are whiny little snits. After the fantastic Grim Fandango, game makers really need to get voice acting in adventure games up to snuff if they want to be taken seriously.
Sam & Max: Season 1 contains three short episodes, which, like most adventure games, have zero replay value. I enjoyed the game as a break from studying, not a serious and immersive experience. A few chuckles here and there are sometimes all a game needs to be endearing.
Fun Game - Riddles with Issues November 22, 2008 The game is fun and somewhat funny. However, I experienced a lot of slowdown and glitching on a PC well above minimum requirements, and to top it all off, it installed SecuROM on my machine. Buy it from Steam if you have to have it.
Lame and irritating October 30, 2008 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
I bought this game based on the positive reviews, but I'm not sure I'm playing the same game as the other reviewers. The dialog is lame, annoying, and repetitive, not funny. Sponge Bob is funnier than this game. The puzzles are neither challenging nor interesting. If you like Myst or Syberia, you will not like this. I only could stand to play it through the first episode and beginning of the second before I decided to uninstall. Very disappointing.
Fun Game But Bad Securom October 9, 2008 This game is so much fun to play. It is simple to play with the mouse. Just point and click and select a response. And sometimes you get to shoot stuffs too. And since this game is made around here, the punchlines are easy to understand. I just sometimes don't quite get the points from many of the games from Europe.
When the game starts, it displays a menu for you to pick the chapter you want to play. There are 6 chapters. What you need to do is to listen to the clues carefully, and pick the right response. The animation is great. The color is bright and bold and colorful. And the punchlines are fun to listen. If you are tired of the dialogues, you can hit the Space Bar to skip it.
The game also comes with an bonus CD and a poster. What a bargain and it is weird to see a free poster nowadays. Steam, eats your heart out!
But I first is having problem installing the game in Vista. UAC pops up when the CD tries to autorun. Well no big deal, just click Allow. And then I try to start the game but get all kind of error messages saying the game cannot access the registry and access violation, etc. I think SecuROM is trying to modify the registry and install system drivers. Vista doesn't seem to like it. So, I right click the game file and click Run As Admin. After SecuROM modify the registry and install the system drivers, the game starts without much problem.
Even though the game can run on Vista, it is not designed for Vista in mind. Sometimes it will crash and I have to try to restart the game. So, save often. (If you open the folder and you see a folder called Compatibility Files, then the game does not follow the Vista programming standard.)
Bottom line, this game is fun to play. 5 stars!!!
