4 out of 5 stars More of what you want   January 2, 2009
The original Gears of War sold me an Xbox360. Prior to that game, I hadn't seen anything on the 360 that really impressed me and screamed, "This is the next generation!" Gears changed that. And now we're back with Gears2.

Gears2 is a sequel of the conservative kind, which quite frankly, I prefer. Professional game reviewers and editors seem to love when sequels throw in lots of random $H!T out of nowhere, or radically change the fundamentals of the game. They forget that this ends up making a game that has little to do with its predecessor other than its name. Thankfully, Epic didn't go this route, and Gears2 is actually more of the same, but refined and tweaked slightly (and with faster chainsaws).

The weapons are all back, including the beloved assault rifle with chainsaw attached, the game is as gruesome as ever, and the new weapons work well (mortars are amazing...seriously). The cover system has been tweaked so that there are fewer instances where you get sucked against a wall or piece of cover when you were actually trying to run full speed out of dodge. It still happens, but Gears2 doesn't have very many "run away from the big angry monster" moments, so it's easily forgiven. There aren't quite as many "oh $H!T" moments as in the first game, and overall, I'd say the original campaign is more diverse and entertaining. Still, the friendly AI is MUCH, MUCH better, meaning your teammates are less prone to walk out and get themselves killed like they did in the first game.

What Gears2 does have is a deeper, more disturbing plotline, which follows Dom looking for his wife Maria and Marcus learning a bit more about his father and his work than he perhaps wanted to know. However, like The Matrix Reloaded, a lot of really cool stuff begins to take shape, such as the true origins of the Locust Horde, but then the game just ends without bringing any closure to the ideas. Bummer.

The multiplayer is again refined and improved. Unfortunately, it would seem the servers were not. As of the time of this review, online games lag horribly, to the point that you'll enter a room, only to have it jerk around for a few moments before suddenly you're dead and you don't know why. A buddy of mine complained of the same issue, so I'm pretty sure it's not my connection, as we both then jumped into a Call of Duty 4 game and it ran flawlessly. Thus, the verdict is still out on the multiplayer, though it looks promising.

Gears2 is more of the same, but that's a good thing. The campaign is best played with a friend, but is bearable if a bit boring if done solo. The UNREAL engine continues to demonstrate that it's a freaking beast of technology, and overall Gears2 is a slightly better version of an already tremendously impressive game.

And seriously, who doesn't want more of the Cole Train?

5 out of 5 stars Sequels really do get better   December 31, 2008

Games seem to be one of the few media that actually get better with sequels. There are some stinkers out there, to be sure, but games like GoW2 improve on the original so much, I dont know where there is to go for GoW3.

For starters, these are some of, if not THE, finest graphics I've ever seen. The shading and rendering and texturing of brick, metal, shadows....basically everything in the world has a photorealistic look to it, in full 3-dimensions, moving at a fast pace. Maybe its because I grew up with a Commodore 64 and Atari 2600 as a starting point that I am in such awe of the look of this game, but its also the atomosphere it portrays, and the rain, rust, and decay conveyed in the graphics really install the sense of dread that the subject matter of the game is all about.

The gameplay is great, and just when you think things can't get any larger-scale or epic...boom, you are flying a reaver. Like a good movie, this game has favorite scenes which I no doubt intend on revisiting again soon.

I beat this on Hardcore quickly, but not so quickly that I didnt feel it to be challenging.

Lastly, the characters are some of the most well written in any game I've seen, funny, dark, and genuine. These guys stick with you, and so does this game, and the overall experience does what every great franchise game is supposed to: begin to build and create frenzied mania for the next installment!

5 out of 5 stars Hands down awesomerest!!!   December 30, 2008

If you like games, BUY THIS ONE. For starters, it's a game, just like it states. It delivers gamey goodness on levels I've never thought possible.

The first game? Awesome.
This game? Beyond awesome. What's the word for better than awesome? awesomerest!!

Online horde is the most fun I've had since Command & Conquer and Diablo from over a decade ago when computers couldn't even stream porn.

The only disappointment... at least for others... is the ending is kind of anticlimactic. How so? If you played GoW1 you know the final "boss" was pretty darned tough. The last thing you beat in Gears2 is relatively easy. The boss before that is tough, but nothing close to the first game's.

There are also a few old characters that could have made it into this one like the Berserkers.

None of that necessarily makes the game any less awesomerest. Just things that could have done that would have added to it.

It's not a question of "should" you buy it... it's a question of "why HAVEN'T you bought it".

3 out of 5 stars Made in Mexico?   December 30, 2008

This game says Made in Mexico and is the only game that won't play in the XBOX. It stops about after 15 minutes and says "CD not readable". I'm still waiting for another one to arrive (late do to weather) but I'm afraid this one will be the same problem. I need to return the game.

*Update* I did get the other game I was waiting for Call of Duty World at War...Made in USA and it works fine :)
